What we can help with

Storms, wind and garage doors on the Downs

Toowoomba gets its share of rough weather. On 26/10/2025 severe storms across the region felled large trees, brought down powerlines and caused flash flooding, and council warned residents to watch for hazards in high winds (Toowoomba Regional Council). The following weekend a large hailstorm led to 107 SES call-outs across the region by Sunday evening, while Ergon crews worked to restore power (Toowoomba Regional Council). In March 2025 ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred brought strong winds, fallen trees and lengthy power outages to Toowoomba (Inside Local Government, 14/03/2025).

A Queensland Government factsheet notes that before current standards, "many garage doors were not reinforced and could not withstand the wind pressures of a severe weather event" (Queensland Government). If a storm has damaged your door, or you are replacing an old one, read new doors and installation for what to ask about wind ratings.

Before you call a technician

  • Check the simple things first. Power to the opener, the remote battery, the safety beams and whether the door has been locked by hand. The garage door won't open checklist takes you through each one.
  • Do not force a stuck door. If a spring or cable has broken, the door can be very heavy or drop suddenly. B&D, a major door maker, says DIY spring repair "is highly discouraged due to the complexity and potential danger involved" (B&D).
  • Take a photo or short video of the door and any gap, bend or damage.
  • Note the door type and size. Roller, sectional (panel) or tilt, single or double, manual or automatic, and the motor brand if you know it.

Repair, service or a new door?

Many problems can be repaired: a broken spring, a frayed cable, a bent track, worn rollers or an opener that needs adjusting. B&D suggests a service in the first 12 months after installation and every two years after that (B&D). A new door is worth pricing when the old one is badly damaged, parts are no longer made, or you want an automatic door, better wind performance or a different look. The price guide shows published price ranges for repairs and new doors side by side.

Licences and electrical work

For building work valued over $3,300, Queensland requires a QBCC licence (QBCC). A new double door with a motor can go over that. If your quote is over $3,300, ask for the licence number and check it on the free QBCC licence search at my.qbcc.qld.gov.au. Adding a new power point for an opener is electrical work, which must be done by a licensed electrician (Electrical Safety Office).

How it works

  1. Send the quote form with your suburb, door type and what is wrong. Have photos ready to send the technician when they call.
  2. We pass your request to an independent local garage door technician, usually the same business day.
  3. The technician contacts you directly to quote and book the job. For work over $3,300, check their QBCC licence before work starts.

What does it cost?

Published October 2026 estimates put a minor garage door repair at around $120 to $400 and a new single automatic roller door, installed, at around $1,200 to $3,500. See every row, its source and what changes the price.

Common questions

Why won't my garage door open?

Common causes include no power to the opener, a flat remote battery, blocked or misaligned safety beams, a manual lock or release left on, and a broken spring. B&D lists misaligned sensors, signal interference and flat remote batteries as reasons a door may not respond (B&D). Work through the checklist.

Can I replace a garage door spring myself?

It is not recommended. Springs are under high tension, and B&D says DIY spring repair "is highly discouraged due to the complexity and potential danger involved" (B&D). See springs and cables.

How often should a garage door be serviced?

B&D suggests a service in the first 12 months after installation and every two years after that (B&D). Check your own door's warranty, as some warranties depend on regular servicing.
